Stamford is researching a new devise that can turn off the nerve that tells us we are hungry. The hope is that the new weight loss therapy will help folks control their fat storage.

The new therapy is considered less invasive than weight loss surgery. In that surgery, there is a tight band placed around the stomach. By placing the band around the stomach, food quickly bypasses large sections of the stomach and moves on to the rest of the digestive track.

The devise has already been tested in countries outside the United States. It is placed just beneath the skin and its electric impulses mix signals to confuse the brain that the stomach is already full.

Dr. John Morton said it has the potential to help patients loose weight without having to “reroute” parts of the body’s digestive system. A blind study will involve volunteers that will have the devise implanted, but only two out of three will have it turned on. Neither the patients nor the researchers will know which. After the first year, the devise will be turned on on all the participants.

EnteroMedics is the owner of the therapy and is funding the project. Some of the volunteers will be followed for five years.
