In an illustration of the explosive growth of the energy shot market, workers at NVE Pharmaceuticals’ Andover, N.J. plant are currently assembling the co-packer’s fourth energy shot filling line.

NVE has notable experience with energy products, according to company president Bob Occhifinto. The pharmaceutical-turned-nutraceutical company fills and labels a wide array of energy drinks for smaller firms, and produced ephedra products before the Food and Drug Administration outlawed the substance in 2004. NVE’s executive vice president Walter Orcutt said the company entered the energy shot co-packing market when it installed its first shot-filling line a little over two years ago. read

Metabadrine ephedra diet pills are available. 

Stamford is researching a new devise that can turn off the nerve that tells us we are hungry. The hope is that the new weight loss therapy will help folks control their fat storage.

The new therapy is considered less invasive than weight loss surgery. In that surgery, there is a tight band placed around the stomach. By placing the band around the stomach, food quickly bypasses large sections of the stomach and moves on to the rest of the digestive track.

The devise has already been tested in countries outside the United States. It is placed just beneath the skin and its electric impulses mix signals to confuse the brain that the stomach is already full.

Dr. John Morton said it has the potential to help patients loose weight without having to “reroute” parts of the body’s digestive system. A blind study will involve volunteers that will have the devise implanted, but only two out of three will have it turned on. Neither the patients nor the researchers will know which. After the first year, the devise will be turned on on all the participants.

EnteroMedics is the owner of the therapy and is funding the project. Some of the volunteers will be followed for five years.

If you think you’ve tried every diet in the book and have no lasting results to show for it, maybe you should consider First Place, a Christ-centered weight loss program designed for getting results and building relationships.

In a matter of days, an orientation for First Steps will occur at Greenwood Family YMCA, to teach potential participants the nature of the program.

According to First Place leader and participant Debbie Dean, the program emphasizes accountability while focusing on nutrition and exercise.

Dean knows what the program can do. She saw results six years ago when she tried it in her home.

“I’ve had great success with the program,” she said. “It works so well because you get to know each other, and you encourage one another plus hold each other accountable with the program. First Place is different from any other weight-loss program because of the emphasis on Bible study and emphasis on prayer.”

DUMMERSTON, Vt. — There’s no getting around it: fat tastes good. In fact, fat tastes great. So there’s this television commercial, Wendy’s, I think, and instead of French fries, our national food, a man orders a baked potato with his breaded and fried whatever-nuggets. Everyone in the restaurant falls over in their chairs. A baked potato instead of fries!

He’s a hero, this guy. People applaud as he walks away from the counter, and a pretty blonde pantomimes “Call me.” But if you look at his plate, the potato is split and jammed like an ice cream sundae with mounds of white fluffy sour cream. And how much do you want to bet there’s butter under there, too?

Because as I said, fat tastes great, and when there’s an abundance of food around, and you can indulge yourself in whatever instant gratification you’re able to dream up, fat is going to be high on the list. Along with sugar, I guess, since America, according to another commercial, runs on Dunkin’ Donuts’ sugar delivery systems.

Even in what might pass for a healthier commercial -say one for low-fat Hood milk – the message takes a dive when, after drinking the milk, the kid “cleanses his palate” with a giant chocolate-chip cookie.

Today it’s common knowledge that one out of three Americans, or 62 million of us, are overweight. We’re seeing four-year-olds with Type 2 diabetes, which used to be called “adult onset” diabetes. Obesity is challenging smoking as the nation’s greatest health risk.

Peoples’ eating habits are so far out of control that stapling someone’s stomach so they can’t jam more food into it seems like a reasonable option. Ads for “Tuscan chicken sandwiches” dripping with melted cheese on toasted bread the size of a Kia Sedona alternate with ads for diet pills and home exercise machines that I, a college graduate, couldn’t put together, much less use.

And if what you enjoy eating disagrees with you, giving you acid indigestion, gas or heartburn, instead of taking that as a warning sign to stop eating it, take a pill and start all over again.  Read more.

Gluttony. A bizarre trend likely to be seen by the rest of the world as typical of American “affluenza” and overconsumption of resources is the recent dramatic increase in the number and popularity of eating contests. The most (in)famous of such events is Nathan’s Annual Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest — the World Cup of food bolting — in which past winners have consumed over 50 frankfurters and buns in just 12 minutes.^[15] The International Federation of Competitive Eating sponsors more than 150 other annual gorgefests, involving such foods as chicken wings, oysters, and jalapenos, which it promotes through its official newsletter, The Gurgitator.^[15]

Low-Fat Yogurt

For decades, yogurt has been a common staple in the diets of those trying to lose weight. And, as it turns out, eating that yogurt probably helped those dieters shed pounds.

Studies have found that yogurt revs up the body’s metabolism. Researchers took two groups of people and put them on the same reduced calorie diet. But one group was instructed to eat three servings of yogurt a day.

The group that ate yogurt not only lost more weight overall, they lost the weight faster. Those eating yogurt also tended to lose more belly fat (the stomach is one of the hard areas to lose fat in), and maintained most of their muscle mass. (Meaning most of the weight they lost was actual fat instead of muscle.)

Low-Fat Dairy Products

Yogurt isn’t the only dairy product that can help you burn fat. The calcium found in all low-fat dairy products can help you lose weight. So, if you want to lose weight, switching to low-fat milk, cream, sour cream, cheese and so on could help you reach your weight loss goals easier and faster.

Calcium Supplements

Calcium supplements can also help you to lose weight. In another study, two groups of participants were put on the same reduced-calorie diet. However, one group was told to take an 800 milligram calcium supplement every day.

And, you guessed it, those who took the calcium supplements lost more weight and burned off more fat, and did both faster, than those who didn’t take the calcium supplements.

Bidalasana, or The Cat
This week we are doing an exercise known as The Cat, which mimics the satisfied stretch of a cat at ease. It is simple and builds strength and suppleness in the spine. I recommend that you repeat it four times a day after the exercises I showed you last week (click here).

Bidalasana, or The Cat

Perform this stretch slowly four times, controlling your breathing throughout.

Get down on all fours with your back flat, knees in line with your hips, and hands in line with your shoulders.

As you inhale, push your tailbone up and away from your body, back towards your feet. Extend and uplift your shoulders and raise your head, so your spine dips into a gentle, upward-facing crescent. Hold for a few seconds.

Exhale as you drop your head down and uplift your back into an arched position.

Keeping your chest open, pull in your stomach and point your tailbone down towards your knees. Hold for a few seconds, then return to the original position.

Consult your doctor if pregnant, recovering from an operation or if you have any medical concerns before beginning an exercise routine. Stop if you feel any pain.
